Branson and the Exploding Kidney

Have you ever heard of PKD? It's much more common than you would think. Many people have never heard of PKD, yet it affects 1 in every 500 people. A brief description of PKD before I jump into my story...

"A normal kidney is the size of a human fist and weighs about a third of a pound. However, with the presence of PKD, cysts develop in both kidneys. When many cysts develop, the kidneys can grow to be the size of a football or larger and weigh as much as 38 pounds each. There may be just a few cysts or many, and the cysts may range in size from a pinhead to the size of a grapefruit."
I was going to insert a picture of an actual kidney of a person with PKD here, but honestly, it made me gag a little, and I didn't want to force it on anyone. But really, go here to see it, it will AMAZE you. Just...unbelievable.

I am no expert on PKD, but I have a little exposure to it. My brother in law has PKD, as does his sister. His sister has my mothers kidney as a matter of fact.. You can read up on that story here.

A few weeks ago almost my entire family attended a fundraiser walk for PKD awareness is Southern PA. Most of the attendees either have PKD, have a loved one with PKD, or have lost a loved one to PKD. We were given little goodie bags, included in each was a foam kidney shaped stress reliever.

See...only ours had words on them.

As the walk got under way we noticed Branson was keeping himself occupied by playing with the foam kidney. Before long he had torn it in half. This wasn't a big deal, at least not at first.

Suddenly Branson threw himself to the ground, holding the torn foam kidney to his side, screaming "MY KIDNEY EXPLODED, MY KIDNEY EXPLODED! AGGGHHHHH!"

Two hundred PKD survivors whirled in terror as they heard their worst nightmares being shouted to the heavens. An exploding kidney?? The horror!.

Egged on by the attention, Branson continued his histrionics, writhing in "pain" as his kidney exploded. The mass of PKD advocates looked on wide-eyed as his dad tried desperately to convey to his son that it wasn't the appropriate time or place for exploding kidneys, meanwhile the rest of the family turned away so he wouldn't see us trying to suppress our laughter.
Things like this happen in your family too right?

  12. Kids have such a great sense of the inappropriate... Like the time my kids stripped naked and then performed a dance with their underpants on their heads when I was having a work meeting with one of my bosses at home...
