The Mudroom: Stage 1

Our house has two awesome closed-in porches, one on the front and one on the back.  For the sake of clarity we are calling the one in front the sunroom/playroom, and the one in the back the mudroom.

As I mentioned before the main entrance to the house is through the mudroom, which is really cool - because mudrooms are awesome - unless your mudroom looks like this...

How is that for a welcoming entry?! Instead of saying "come on in!" it kinda says "back the $#@% off" ya know?

Part of that is the fact that as we worked it was easy to let this become a dumping ground for torn down paneling, ripped up carpet, etc., and the funky floor you are seeing is actually a wheelchair ramp.  The boys and I go in and out of this door several times a day, at I couldn't wait to get a move on in this room.

So Saturday was the day! While the boys were napping I ripped up all the carpet, and started to pull up the ramp. I got down to the bare wood when the boys woke up and Luke NEEDED Mama, so Matt took over while the boys and I cheered him on.
Whoever constructed this ramp took their job very seriously, because this puppy was not going ANYWHERE without a fight.  But eventually Matt prevailed!
After Matt tore out the ramp, we switched off on playing with the little guys, while I tackled ripping out the rest of the old moldy carpet and cleaning the space.
Right now the mudroom is still mostly utilitarian, but it is 100% more welcoming to come home! And because you know I love a good side-by-side comparison...
We found that the concrete is in great condition, so I definitely see a pretty painted floor in our future!

Which leads me to a question.  Have you ever painted a concrete floor?  Does it get slippery? I am a little worried about creating some sort of safety hazard if I paint the floor.

  1. What about staining it Bekah? You can do it yourself with a sprayer (the cheap kind with a pump) Seal it and it is good to go. It looks beautiful too!

I love seeking the progress you are making. So fun!

    1. hmmm Good Point! I definitely need to explore my options on this one! Thanks - we are having fun making it feel like home. We know from past experience (you know what I mean) that things can change overnight, so we are just enjoying our time making it a home for our little fam!

    1. Haha I honestly felt bad tearing it down since it was so well made. But...you know...no wheelchair here so there wasnt much point in us keeping it there. I wish it had been something we could have given to someone to reuse you know?

Anyway...Thanks!! Haha I got a little longwinded there...

  6. I think you can put sand in the paint which makes it less slippy...
